Overview
For four years a man in a white mask has drowned the men who drowned my city. I've written up every one of them. Tonight he's on my fire escape, asking me to hunt him.GREER
I'm thirty-one. I'm a death investigator for the Medical Examiner's Office, and I say good morning to every body I kneel beside, because somebody should say their names.
Fourteen years ago the Narrows Gate was held open on the night of the Surge, and two hundred and twelve people drowned. The city blamed the man in the control room. My father. Half the Sunk still calls me the Gatekeeper's daughter where I can hear it.
For four years someone has been drowning the men who bought their way clear of that night, carrying them up out of the harbor and laying them above the tide line with a ferry token in the right hand. The papers call him the Tideman. I'm the only one who ever wrote down what he's doing: Intended to be found.
Now the city has put me on the task force to catch him. The same night, a white face with a brass seam down one cheek looks in at my window and says, Hunt me, Investigator. I'll let you get close.
Then an old man turns up drowned in water you could drink, with a bright new token in his hand. Someone else is wearing the Tideman's signature, and the Tideman wants him found as badly as I do.
So I give the masked man my terms. A hunt after midnight through the flooded streets of the Sunk. My ground, my rules, and one word that stops everything.
He says every rule back to me, word for word. The first time I knock three times, he stops.
I still don't know his face. I'm going to find it.
THE TIDEMANI've read every statement you ever filed about me. Everyone else wrote that the men were dumped. You wrote intended to be found. Nobody else in this city ever read me right.
I have one rule. Only the men who drowned the Sunk and bought their way clear. Only after the law has had its turn and let them walk. Never anybody who didn't choose it.
Somebody is breaking it for me now. He's drowning the people who were going to tell the truth about the Surge, and putting my token in their hands. He has already run you a bath, in your own apartment, with a copy of my token at the bottom.
Nobody hunts you but me.
You made the rules. I said them back. I'll say them back every time. And when you knock, I stop. There's no deciding. There's you knocking, and then there's nothing else.
Fourteen nights to the king tide. You're going to find my face before then. I lost to you on the first morning, before I even got my mask off.
