Migration Scars
Overview
Beneath North Carolina's Brown Mountain, something ancient has opened.
When researcher Willa Carrick detects an impossible signal beneath a remote ridge, she expects faulty equipment. Then wildlife begins moving along a path no map can explain. Roads split. Clocks disagree. People step into familiar places and emerge somewhere else, if they emerge at all.
Fifteen years later, Willa Carrick is back at Brown Mountain, studying strange lights and signals that move southwest through solid rock. Animals have begun following the same hidden route. Then people start disappearing from roads, homes, and work sites, pulled into places where the ground, the clocks, and even their own bodies no longer agree. 15 years after a field accident took her closest friend, Willa is forced to work beside Scott Fenner, the scientist she once blamed for everything. Together, they uncover a buried geological scar that has become a living corridor, carrying matter, memory, and human lives southwest through a landscape that no longer obeys one version of reality.
As the rupture widens across the Appalachians, Willa and Scott face an impossible choice: seal the corridor before it tears the region apart, or send someone into it to learn where it leads.
Some paths were never meant to be reopened.
A researcher vanishes on a North Carolina ridge, leaving behind an impossible reading and a scar in the mountain that should not exist.
With the crisis spreading across the Appalachians, Willa must trust Scott Fenner, the man she has never forgiven for what happened on that ridge. What they find is older than either of them and far more dangerous: an open migration corridor beneath the mountains, carrying something through the world one broken step at a time.
