Overview
What is the true value of an encouraging word? Is it even possible to put a price tag on the power of positive affirmation and how it makes us feel when others speak blessings into our lives? If we are honest, it means the world because we feel valued and appreci-ated. It stabilizes our mental health and energizes us physically. Our emotions become optimistic and we find ourselves at peace spiritually. Affirming words also have the power to strengthen our faith despite spiritual war-fare, enabling us to overcome fear, doubt, and anxiety.
Keep in mind, the enemy wants nothing more than to overwhelm our minds with negative thoughts and hold us captive to worry. As long as we give ear to pessimism and open our hearts to misery, Satan can plunge our minds into hopelessness and despair. Isolation is his strategy of attack which is highly effective when positive affirmation is missing from our lives. Therefore, it is imperative we "encourage one another and build each other up" (1 Thessalonians 5:11) to guard against the enemy's schemes.
It is also equally imperative to wash our minds daily with the truth of God's Word. Scripture has the power to focus our minds, minister to our hearts, and strengthen our souls. It is God's primary way of talking to us to ensure we are guided by wisdom each day. The Bible teaches, "Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom" (James 3:13). Those who possess wisdom understand the true source of knowledge and do not reject absolute truth but adopt it as their own foundation of morality.
Sometimes, though, it can be difficult to hear God speaking to our hearts. We may read our Bibles, but there is something to be said for hearing wisdom from a loved one who is willing to speak truth daily. Case in point, the entire premise of "The Mirror and The Compass" is to provide a blueprint for affirmation and guidance from a parent to their daughter. It combats spiritual warfare with positive reassurance to ensure she knows that she is safe and secure. It also reaffirms how much she is loved and accepted despite what the enemy says.
There is simply no substitute for encouragement from a parent. We can find love in many places, but we only have one set of biological parents who cannot be replaced. For example, there is a reason those who are adopted often try to reconnect with their biological parents. There is a bond there which cannot be replicated no matter how hard they try. Children long to receive affirmation from their parents, and we have the ability to speak blessing over each other daily.
None of us long to hear disparaging words from those who care about us most. We don't want to question their intent when they speak hurtful words towards us either. One of the worst feelings in the world is believing we are unloved or unworthy of being loved. This destruc-tive speech comes straight from the pit of hell itself and has no place in our homes. Daughters need affirmation and godly wisdom from the pages of Scripture, and it is our job to shepherd them there.
The world can be a cold and lonely place, but it also reminds us that our heavenly Father loves us more than we will ever know. He estab-lished family for a reason, and He expects parents to love, honor, and protect their children with grace and mercy. We all need salvation to enter the kingdom of heaven, but parents play a vital role affirming a child's identity in Christ so they never forget who they are and to whom they belong. Daughters are uniquely designed to bring love and tenderness to this hardened world, and it is our job to affirm their value because they are infinitely precious to the Lord.
