Movie Reviews

Synopsis:
An early effort by cult filmmaker John Waters. This black comedy follows the members of a freak show as they travel around the country robbing and murdering their audiences. The movie represents your only chance to see everybody's favorite transvestite -- Divine -- being raped by a 15-foot lobster.

Reviews:
"Transgression is at the heart of Waters’ ethos; his earliest films, in particular, derive much of their power from the feeling that you’re seeing something you’re not supposed to..." -- Grade: B - 08/03/2016 A.V. Club

"Some of the film’s funniest moments occur when customers, fresh from Middle America, gawk at the sights, clucking their disapproval like annoyed hens." - 08/04/2016 New York Times

"[Waters] tips his hat to Tod Browning's FREAKS and to the Manson Family, while simultaneously exploring the blasphemous outer limits of his Catholicism." - 08/01/2016 Hollywood Reporter

"This restored 1970 film is rough around the edges even by Waters’ own lo-fi standards, but it’s still gleefully subversive, outrageously trashy and, possibly, shocking." - 02/16/2017 The Guardian
