My Inner Darkness : August Rain
Overview
It rained the night his daughter was born. The next morning Dave Anderson changed the bulb in the porch light, and he left it on.
Dave is the man the whole town calls first. He has a backhoe, two dump trucks, and no job anyone could put a name to, and there isn't a cellar hole for miles that he didn't dig. His house stands on eleven acres of lake shore that his grandfather left the family, and on Saturdays the yard fills with folding chairs and smoke from the grill, as it did in his father's time. He is good with engines and better with his little girl. He takes her fishing. He waits for her bus. He carries the same can of beer all afternoon and pours it out warm.
Then, over years, things begin to leave. His wife's smile stops moving. His chair moves down the lawn, out past where the light reaches. A friend says one sentence about his daughter that he can't put down. There are evenings he doesn't remember, and people who look at him as if he should.
On the last Saturday of August, the night of her send-off, something happens at that house.
What's left is everything after: who stops coming by, what a house sounds like with one man in it, and how long he can keep a light burning for someone who has his number.
August Rain is a slow-burn psychological novel that follows one family in small-town Massachusetts for twenty-three years. It is about a father and a daughter, about what gets handed down in a family without anyone choosing it, and about the distance between loving someone and being able to stop. There is no monster in it. There is a chair, a porch light, and a night that is never explained.
Book Three of My Inner Darkness. It stands on its own.
