Overview
A stranger does not give you his name. A soldier at a gate does not give you his name. People give their names when they want you to be able to find them again. This is the first and simplest reason why God told us His name. He wants to be found.
I count seven reasons in Scripture. Learn them in order, because each one leads to the next.
Reason one: so that we may know Him
In Exodus 6:7 the LORD says, "Ye shall know that I am the LORD your God, which bringeth you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians." In the book of Ezekiel the sentence "they shall know that I am the LORD" comes back again and again, more than sixty times, like a drum.
God is not content to be a force or an idea. A force does not have a name. An idea cannot love you back. He gives His name because He wants to be known as a Person, by persons.
Reason two: so that we may call on Him
JOEL 2:32
"And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call."
