Nature's Inherent Asymmetry : Kepler's snowflakes, Darwin's bee cells, and other indestructible fallacies
Overview
"All of Nature's forms - from Black Holes to molecules - are shaped symmetrically: their left and right halves mirror each other."
Of course, one has only to look at anything created by Nature - starting perhaps with one's face in a mirror - to realize immediately that that is untrue: simply, obviously, irrefutably, untrue The equally false corollary, but intimately related to it, is that all of Nature's creations are also simple in appearance.
Why should we care about these fallacies?
The answer is because, since the dawn of the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century, these fallacies have been accepted as indisputably true, not only by people with impaired eyesight but by great scientists such as Kepler in the 17th century, who discovered the laws of planetary motion; and Einstein in the 20th century, who discovered the Law of Relativity and so much else. These fallacies also became deeply embedded inn aesthetic theory, among others by Michelangelo and Corbusier, and asserted themselves most widely in architecture: look at most large buildings ("the White House") or even at many if not most private houses, and you will see that their left and right halves mirror each other.
The influence of this fallacy is profound, widespread: don't most people accept that snowflakes are symmetric? Even though there is no evidence that even a single symmetric snowflake has ever been seen? And that is not just a popular myth but a doctrine asserted by the very many scientists, chiefly physicists, who have studied snowflakes and who, over and over again (starting with Kepler himself) have allowed themselves to deny what their eyes have seen
It is important to understand that the fallacy of Nature's symmetry is not just a harmless quirk Possibly the only great scientist not to have fallen for it is Louis Pasteur./ "The universe is asymmetrical", he declared boldly, "all living creatures ... in their structure and in their outward form, are] functions of cosmic asymmetry". And it was on the basis of this very recognition that Pasteur made many of his great discoveries that, quite literally, have saved billions upon billions of human lives And so we should ask ourselves: how many more truly great discoveries would have been made if so many scientists were not blinded by the symmetry fallacy to this very obvious truth ?
