Overview

An ambitious young crime journalist probes the dark underbelly of L.A. in this cynical urban drama that marks the feature directorial debut of film writer Dan Gilroy (REAL STEAL, THE BOURNE LEGACY). Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal) is a petty thief in search of a payday when he stumbles onto the scene of a grisly car accident, and witnesses seasoned "Nightcrawler" Joe Loder (Bill Paxton) gathering video footage for a local news broadcast. Convinced that this is a career he could excel at, Lou promptly purchases a police scanner and a cheap video camera, and hits the streets. In short order Lou has hired an assistant (Riz Ahmed) to help him navigate the city streets, and started selling footage to local TV producer Nina (Rene Russo), one of Joe's regular buyers. A fast learner with an eye for detail, Lou isn't above manipulating a crime scene in order to get a picture that tells a story. When Lou beats the police to the scene of a deadly home invasion in an affluent neighborhood, however, his shocking footage catches the attention of two homicide detectives who suspect he's hiding evidence that could be crucial to their investigation. But that very footage may be just what Lou needs to enter the big time.

"NIGHTCRAWLER is well worth seeing just for Gyllenhaal’s spectacularly creepy performance." -- Grade: B - 10/30/2014 A.V. Club

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "This is a deliciously twisted piece of work. And Gyllenhaal, coiled and ready to spring, is scarily brilliant." - 10/30/2014 Rolling Stone

"NIGHTCRAWLER is pulp with a purpose. A smart, engaged film powered by an altogether remarkable performance by Jake Gyllenhaal..." - 10/30/2014 Los Angeles Times

"NIGHTCRAWLER keeps NETWORK's battle cry alive. It's a 21st-century takedown of the media's pandering ''if it bleeds, it leads'' ethos and the ghoulish nightcrawlers who live by it." -- Grade: B+ - 10/31/2014 Entertainment Weekly

4 stars out of 4 -- "This is a classic film, not just because every scene and line is casually beautiful and devoid of extraneous touches, but because its tone is mercilessly exact." - 10/31/2014 RogerEbert.com

"Mr. Gyllenhaal’s performance...is disciplined and meticulous in its creepiness, and Mr. Gilroy keeps the audience off balance, fascinated and repelled, half rooting for Lou to succeed, and half dreading what he will do next." - 10/30/2014 New York Times

"It’s a brilliant performance by Gyllenhaal in a film that veers from dark satire to tense crime thriller..." - 10/30/2014 Chicago Sun-Times

4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] ghoulish satire that trawls the dark corners and neon-soaked streets of LA....Gaunt and bug-eyed, Jake Gyllenhaal excels..." - 10/27/2014 Total Film

"Touches of apocalyptic comedy run throughout NIGHTCRAWLER....Gyllenhaal is undeniably committed to the role..." - 09/06/2014 Variety

5 stars out of 5 -- "Sharp, dark, satirical and bone-rattlingly thrilling, with a career-peak turn from Jake Gyllenhaal. It’s this year’s DRIVE." - 10/24/2014 Empire
