Overview
The Odyssey recounts the adventures of the hero who, after causing the destruction of Troy, embarks on his mythical journey back to his kingdom of Ithaca. Lost in a universe teeming with dangers, the aging warrior Odysseus must transform himself into a formidable sailor to confront, with his cunning, the countless wondrous beings -- Cyclopes, Sirens, sorceresses, and even the gods themselves -- who stand in his way. Once in Ithaca, the hero must take up arms again to reclaim his kingdom, defended during his long absence by his wife Penelope and his young son Telemachus. Odysseus's journey is, in turn, the journey of an old-fashioned hero to a more modern and versatile one, capable of adapting to the challenges of a constantly evolving world. Composed nearly three thousand years ago, the Odyssey is also an enduring classic from which all adventure stories descend and which has never ceased to inspire new artistic and literary creations.
