Overview

For years fascism research mostly focused on the two major proto-fascisms in Italy and Germany. Recently, it has increasingly turned attention on "small" regimes. For this reason, the present issue is devoted to Austrofascism as an informative study object for "small" dictatorships. The contributions discuss the type and degree of ideological transfer, strategies in internal regime rivalries and attempts to integrate marginalized sections of the population, and previously ignored aspects of repressive policy and the intelligence system. Two contributions also deal with the structure that at the last moment attempted to oppose the system's implementation with armed resistance: the Republican Protection League as a militia of the local labour movement.
