Overview
Kwayno buys the kids bicycles. He also keeps a gun close.
On Bellamy, both things belong to the same man. There is money to collect, family to see, somebody asking for a favour. Kwayno likes his neighbourhood. He likes being known there. The work that pays him is part of the place, too.
Then a rival rapper puts people Kwayno cares about into a song.
He has something to say back. When Outside reaches the block, hearing his own words coming from other people's speakers feels good. People know the hook. They repeat the names. A record made among friends starts travelling well beyond the room where it began.
But the arguments in the songs belong to men who can find one another in the street. Kwayno still has ordinary things to do tomorrow. The people listening have plans of their own.
Outside is a short, gritty crime novel about neighbourhood loyalty, music and the dangerous business of belonging. A complete standalone story in Port Haven Lives, for adult readers.
