Power Line Communication Systems for Smart Grids
Overview
Power line communications enable electric power system components to use the very power lines for communication about voltage, frequency, generation and loads. This work covers the technology systematically. This second edition offers updates and new content on noise types, mitigation, and properties of power line channels. Power Line Communication (PLC) is a technology allowing for the transmission of data through electrical wires. A key advantage of PLC is its low cost of deployment when the electrical wiring infrastructure already exists. PLC has recently received growing attention and significant investments within the development of the Smart Grids (SG). Their bidirectional structure including integrated communication networks for real time monitoring, control and automatic intervention capability require cost-efficient and robust data exchange and communication.
This book presents the fundamentals and principles of the technologies behind narrowband and broadband PLC technologies and covers coding techniques, energy monitoring, control and management, particularly with intermittent renewable energies, and main standards.
The second edition offers updates to the chapters, and new chapters, e.g. on noise types and mitigation, and use of PLC with EV.
