Overview
In Praise of Folly is a satirical essay written by the Dutch philosopher and theologian, Erasmus, in 1509. The essay is a critique of the society and culture of the time, and is presented as a speech given by Folly, the goddess of foolishness and pleasure. Throughout the essay, Folly praises herself and the virtues of foolishness, arguing that it is necessary for happiness and the enjoyment of life. She also criticizes the vices of the era, such as greed, hypocrisy, and the misuse of religion for personal gain. Erasmus uses Folly's speech to comment on the corruption and moral decay of the church and the political establishment of his time. He also touches on broader themes such as the nature of human folly, the role of satire in society, and the importance of critical thinking. In Praise of Folly is considered a masterpiece of Renaissance literature and a landmark work in the history of European thought.
