Precaution
Overview
Precaution is a novel written by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in 1820. The story is set in England and follows the lives of two American sisters, Emily and Cecilia, who are introduced to British society by their aunt and uncle. Emily is a practical and level-headed young woman, while Cecilia is more impulsive and prone to making rash decisions. Despite their differences, both sisters attract the attention of several suitors, including the wealthy and titled Lord Chatterton. As the story unfolds, the sisters navigate the complex social hierarchy of British high society, encountering both kindness and cruelty along the way. They must also confront their own prejudices and preconceptions about the world they inhabit. Ultimately, both sisters must make difficult choices about their futures and the men they love. Precaution is notable for being Cooper's first novel, and for its departure from his later works, which are primarily set in the American wilderness and feature heroic male protagonists. Instead, Precaution is a domestic novel that explores the themes of love, class, and morality in a more restrained and nuanced manner than Cooper's later works. Despite its initial lackluster reception, Precaution is now regarded as an important precursor to the development of the American novel.Looks of a singular import were exchanged between Colonel Egerton and Sir Herbert Nicholson, at the mention of Denbigh's name; which, as the latter had just asked the favor of taking wine with Mrs. Wilson, did not escape her notice. Emily had innocently mentioned his precipitate retreat the night before; and he had, when reminded of his engagement to dine with them that very day, and promised an introduction to Sir Herbert Nicholson by John, in her presence, suddenly excused himself and withdrawn. With an indefinite suspicion of something wrong, she ventured, therefore, to address Sir Herbert Nicholson. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
