Proof of God : The Abrahamic Promise: A Family Written in Scripture and Stone
Overview
Most fathers disappear from history. Within a few generations even their names are gone.
Abraham is different.
Before he held any land, any army, or any throne, specific claims were spoken over his family. His descendants would be beyond counting. Twelve tribes would descend from Isaac through Jacob, and twelve princes from Ishmael. A great nation would follow. A territory was named, with borders.
One fulfilled prediction is a coincidence. Two is a curiosity, and three?
This is what happened to the rest.
Assyrian emperors campaign against Ishmael's sons and record their kings and queens by name across a century and a half. The last king of Babylon abandons his capital to live ten years in the oasis bearing one of those names - and Babylon's own chronicle records the New Year festival cancelled, year after year, in his absence. A silver bowl in the Brooklyn Museum carries the name of a king of Qedar. Tens of thousands of inscriptions survive in desert scripts that modern scholars named after the very towns Genesis assigns to Abraham's eastern sons. The covenant sign in the flesh was never dropped, and a first-century Jewish historian says so plainly. Every rival nation named as holding the promised land is extinct - while both branches of Abraham's family are still in it, and more than ninety-seven percent of the territory described in Genesis 15:18 is held today by his other sons.
And the count itself. The branch promised covenant is fifteen million and holds the book. The branch promised multiplication is four hundred million and holds a language and a continent. Every neighbouring people of that world - Ammon, Moab, Edom, Amalek, Philistia, Phoenicia, Aram - is gone. Two survived. They are the two sons of one man.
Today more than four billion people, over half of everyone alive, trace their faith to that single family.
A single fulfilment can be luck. A convergence of them - in the right region, in the right centuries, recorded by empires that had never read Genesis and had no reason to help - is the hardest kind of evidence there is to refute.
Few books put evidence for God on the table like this one does. Not feeling. Not argument from design. Museum accession numbers, clay prisms, tribute lists, and a map.
Hand this book to the man who denies God, and ask him for a better explanation.
Not an argument to be won. A record to be checked.
The promise was spoken over a slave woman at a spring, and over a boy dying of thirst in a valley with no water.
Four thousand years later, the empires that pressed those names into clay are dust.
The family is still here.
