RattleWake : Book One
Overview
In Velrusk, winter ends with a dance. This year, the dance wants to keep the dancers.
Seventeen-year-old Mavren once dreamed of leading Rattlewake, her village's cherished winter ceremony. A lasting knee injury has left her outside the circle-until a boy dies during rehearsal, and she sees something move beneath his skin.
The keeper insists the ritual must continue. Mavren's oldest friend dismisses her fears as jealousy. But when sleeping villagers begin walking toward the salt quarry and fragments of bone tap out the dancers' rhythm, Mavren can no longer pretend the danger is imagined.
Joined by a stubborn quarry apprentice and a deaf friend who refuses to be excluded, she searches for the warning buried beneath generations of tradition. Something below Velrusk has been learning its people: their steps, their rhythms, their bodies.
And the village is preparing to give it exactly what it needs.
To save the people she loves, Mavren must confront the secrets that hold her community together-and stop the dance she once wanted more than anything.
Rattlewake, the first book of The Rattlewake Quartet by Seren Wispvale, is a chilling young adult folklore horror novel about friendship, belonging, and the courage to break step before the music takes control.
