Overview
This volume examines how contemporary artistic and cultural practices engage with the past as a means of interpreting the social, political and cultural conditions of the present. Bringing together contributions on the Arab world, Iran, Turkey and South Asia, the collection explores the ways in which history, memory, trauma, archives and cultural inheritance are reworked through visual art, performance, literature and related practices.
Organised into four thematic sections, the book considers artists and other cultural practitioners as historical subjects; the relationship between trauma and collective memory; the role of archives, records and historical truth; and the reactivation of cultural legacies within contemporary practice. Rather than treating the past simply as subject matter, the contributors show how artistic practices can themselves operate as forms of historical inquiry, challenging established narratives and generating alternative forms of knowledge. By bringing regional case studies into dialogue with broader debates on contemporaneity, historiography and memory, the collection also examines how histories from the MENA/SWANA region and South Asia can reshape wider understandings of contemporary art and its relationship to historical time.
