Overview
Charlie is the smallest ant on the farm, but he feels the world calling him in a way no one else seems to hear. Every day, a mysterious "Passing" - a human jogger - thunders through the clearing, shaking the ground and Charlie's imagination. The colony treats it as danger, but Charlie feels something different: "The ground had started singing."
Restless and unable to accept a life of lines and routine, Charlie confides in his friends Zags and Sniffles. Together, in a hideout behind a scrap pile that "smelled like rust and stale sugar and bad choices," they form a plan that is equal parts brilliant and disastrous: they will build a way to launch themselves onto the Passing and discover where it comes from.
The trio officially names themselves The Renegades - rebels, explorers, and rule-breakers who refuse to stay fenced in. Their hideout becomes a headquarters for terrible ideas, including a toothpick-powered catapult that Sniffles accidentally invents by flinging himself into a bush. Charlie realizes this is the key to their mission.
As they practice timing the tremors and studying the rhythm of the Passing, Charlie's determination deepens. The world beyond the green is enormous, dangerous, and alive - and he is done watching it from a rock. The Renegades are preparing for their first leap into the unknown, a leap that will separate them, test them, and ultimately lead them to unlikely allies and a world far bigger than they ever imagined.
Their journey hasn't begun yet - but the thunder is getting closer.
