Renewable Energy Sources and Technologies
Overview
Renewable energy offers significant environmental and economic benefits, although it also presents challenges, including high initial installation costs, energy storage requirements, and, in some cases, extensive land use. Among renewable technologies, solar photovoltaic systems are particularly well suited for agricultural irrigation, reducing soil and water pollution associated with fossil fuel-powered pumps. Solar thermal technology provides another efficient solution by supplying energy for heating and cooling systems, which account for a substantial share of electricity consumption. Compared with many other renewable energy options, solar thermal systems are cost-effective and require relatively little space. They can also be used for winter energy production through solar water heating. As rising temperatures increase the demand for cooling, solar-powered cooling systems offer a sustainable response to climate change. This approach is especially relevant for countries such as Iraq, where extreme heat and growing energy demands make renewable energy an essential component of future sustainable development.
