His P-51 Mustang fighter aircraft was shot down near Carentan, France on June 6. He was rescued by French Partisan fighters. Among these valiant French freedom fighters was a 19-year-old woman, Margaret Inghouf. She subsequently saved his life, when Davis was seriously wounded in the multi-day battle for Carentan. Their love, whose seeds were sown in war-torn France in 1944, bloomed into a full flowered romance 40 years later.
