Return to Odd : More Tales from Rural Vermont
Overview
After a difficult year during which the Odderton Country Store-the heartbeat of the town-was nearly lost, then saved by an unexpected source, life had returned to normal in the remote, Northeast Kingdom village of Oddertown. That is, until an opioid-induced shooting of one of its most-beloved citizens shook the community to its core. How could this happen here? Was there a killer on the loose? Was this person responsible for the small-scale thefts around town? Was there an illicit drug operation behind all of this? Chief of Police Carl Johnsgaard has his hands full finding the shooter while keeping the town together. Then, massive flooding from a tropical storm unearths a painful and long-buried secret from a crime committed nearly two decades before, drawing Carl back to his past and into self-doubt.
Meanwhile, retired professor and widower James D. Watson-dubbed the 'Wizard of Odd' by the townsfolk-finds himself not only steering Carl through rough waters, but drawn deeper into a relationship with Kate Langford, owner of Odderton Country Store and lone descendant of the Odderton lineage. Jim faces a decision that will affect not only the rest of his life, but possibly Oddertown's future.
Exploring themes of fear, ethics, and redemption, the book ultimately asks how far one can expect forgiveness to be extended. Through numerous challenges that include teaching high school students in a bold and innovative way, protecting an innocent, immigrant family from the U.S. Border Patrol, and addressing the future of the now 7th-generation Odderton family lineage, Return to Odd picks up where The Wizard of Odd left off. A cast of previously established and entirely new characters inhabit this small, quirky, and authentic village in rural Vermont, who as a community continue to deal with whatever the world throws at them.
