Run the Dark : A Christian EMP Survival Thriller
Overview
The government has come to save the Ozarks. First, it wants every vial of insulin in them.
A clean Christian EMP survival thriller. No profanity, no sexual content. Contains realistic survival violence.
Eleven good days. That's what's left in the springhouse when the relief column rolls down US-63 with flags, flour and printed orders.
The colonel is polite. He's sorry it took so long. All medicine, he says, must be surrendered into federal custody, and every skilled adult must report for reconstruction duty. In the lead truck, with the county's stolen fuel and the registry he kept, rides Garrett Pruitt. The Harlows are at the top of his list.
The insulin is headed for a cold room in a mountain under Springfield, 120 miles north, and the highway belongs to the column. But every train in America stopped where it was on the night of the pulse, and the old Frisco line runs beside the highway the whole way, with nobody watching it. Lineman Wade Harlow knows a retired section foreman with a sixty-year-old motorcar in his shed. His wife, Lainey, a nurse who has already been left on one porch too many, says "We."
They leave their nine-year-old on the ridge with her brother, a goat named Abednego and a feed-sack sheet of sick-day rules, and promise to be home in a week.
Ahead lie stalled coal trains, a boy with a rifle at a dark crossing, an early snow, and a city with the only electric lights in the Ozarks. Behind the lights is a mountain, a warm, clean ward full of children on insulin, and a man in a pressed uniform who would very much like to hire a lineman.
Lainey counts what she has. She has done it every day since the pulse. This time one number is missing.
Inside you'll find:
- A railroad road trip: a seven-hundred-pound motorcar with no reverse gear, lifted off the track an end at a time to get around a mile and a half of stalled coal train
- Survival medicine through a nurse's eyes, from a farmhouse where the stove is quietly poisoning everyone in it to a ward run by a list
- A warlord in federal clothes who governs by letterhead and kindness, in a world where nobody can check his orders
- A marriage with one rule, nothing either of us carries alone, and a family that breaks it out of love
- Faith told honestly: scripture that cuts both ways, prayers that go quiet, and what it costs to overcome evil with good
- A countdown that runs through every chapter, and a clock nobody can stop
