Overview
Stefan's grandfather Wilfred is his hero. The WW1 veteran took Stefan from an early age and instilled love, respect and compassion in him. Constantly daydreaming, Stefan struggled academically. Living on his parent's farm in the small town of Steinheim. He found life to be both heavenly and idyllic. On his eighteenth birthday Stefan and his family's world comes crashing down when he is conscripted in to the German army and is sent to fight on the Russian front. He is there only two days when he is shot while trying to save the life of one of his comrades. After his rehabilitation and to his horror he is reassigned to the Heber Hagen concentration camp which was situated on the German-polish border. From the moment he sets foot into the cesspit he realizes how much he hates the Nazis and their ideologies. Sickened by the inhuman treatment and starvation of the Jewish inmates, he and his newly found comrade and friend Lukas Kaufmann decide to save a soul. If we can keep just one of them alive, we will have succeeded. Their object for preservation is Rifka Berkovich and her two children. Stefan and Lukas go to extraordinary lengths to insure Rifka and her children walk through the barbed wire gates to freedom at the end of the war. Stefan has a profound and unimaginable effect on everyone he comes in contact with. He even convinces SS officer Oskar Hermann to help him in his quest.
