Overview
Shades of Joy: Our Crowns and Our HIStory is a coloring book by Nakia Rivers with 24 portraits of children to color, each beneath a printed caption about an inventor or a first.
Each coloring page has a bold caption at the top, two to five lines long, and a head and shoulders portrait below it. The captions credit things like the ice cream scooper, refrigeration for long haul trucks and the video game cartridge. Every portrait has its own hairstyle: locs, twists, cornrows, fades or curls.
Is this for you?
What age is it for?
Children ages 4 to 8.
What do the captions say?
They name the person and what they made or did. One says Lonnie Johnson invented the Super Soaker water gun, one says Otis Boykin's devices were used in the pacemaker, and one says Guion S. Bluford flew aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1983.
How detailed is the line work?
Portraits have clean bold outlines with fine detail in the hair, clothing and shading, and the faces are drawn large and open.
Will coloring one page mark another?
Each of the 24 pages has a blank page behind it, so any bleed through lands on a blank page.
