Overview
This practice method is performed for the prevention of calamities, the increase of wealth, and the accumulation of merit. "Vaiśravaṇa" means "he who hears much. " This deva was named thus because he constantly protected the Buddha and listened to his teachings. The sutras that expound on Vaiśravaṇa state: "Merely hearing the name of Vaiśravaṇa brings immeasurable merit, which cannot be compared to anything in the world. He produces immeasurable treasures of the seven precious gems from his left hand and manifests all dharmas from his right hand, bestowing treasures that fulfill the wishes of sentient beings. If one hears the name of Vaiśravaṇa, all obstacles arising from karma will vanish, and one can attain enlightenment." The Chuin-ryu tradition teaches that this deva protects our dharma lineage and must therefore be revered.
