Overview
A killed story, a missing man, and a Des Moines winter that does not care.
Des Moines, January 1985. Eleven degrees before the wind gets involved, and a briefcase abandoned on the Skywalk with blood soaked through the Sunday paper.
Daniel Cawl spent seventeen years at the Register before the paper decided his questions were damaging rather than wrong. Now he works out of a room above a dying movie house, forty dollars a day plus expenses, mostly photographing men who claim their backs are ruined.
Then a wife walks in with two thousand dollars and a story. Her husband is missing. A police captain came to her house and searched her husband's study before he searched for her husband. And in the study drawer was a carbon copy of an article Cawl wrote in 1978, the one that was killed before it ever ran.
The dead story was about a department store fire that took seven people, and a settlement that closed far too fast. Seven years later, somebody still cares enough about it to leave a man's blood on a newspaper.
Cawl has a locksmith who used to be a cop, a detective who keeps his real case files in shoeboxes, and a city that would rather not know what is underneath it.
The cold in Iowa is not hostile. It is only patient.
