Overview
Who is Jesus, really? Who are you because of him? And what does that life actually look like?
The Sojourner is an eighteen-week Bible study in three movements, built around the word Peter chose for God's people: parepidemos - sojourner. A resident alien. Someone who belongs to God before they belong to any place.
Series One - I AM (six weeks in the Gospel of John)
The great I AM statements - the Bread, the Light, the Gate and the Shepherd, the Resurrection, the Way, the Vine - and the question they refuse to let us avoid: who is Jesus, really, and what does your answer demand of you?
Series Two - Chosen, Called, and Held (six weeks in 1 Peter)
A letter written to elect exiles by a man who failed his Lord beside one fire and was restored beside another. Identity before behavior: who you are is settled before anything is asked of you.
Series Three - Living in Our Identity (six weeks in the Beatitudes)
On a mountainside in Galilee, Jesus paints the portrait of a kingdom person - one character, formed from the inside out. The final week steps back and looks at all eighteen weeks at once.
Written by a lay teacher for real classrooms. Every lesson includes a teacher preparation box, a series question that builds week to week, a teaching narrative meant to be delivered in your own voice, and a closing section - discussion questions, a look at next week, and a closing prayer - grouped so a teacher can copy it straight from the book as a class handout. Sessions run about ninety minutes. No seminary training required; none was required to write it.
For Wednesday night classes, adult Sunday school, small groups, and any teacher who wants to open the Scriptures with a room full of people and let them do their work.
The sojourner does not travel grimly toward home. The sojourner travels held - by the God who owns every road you will ever walk.
