Overview
In the future - at some time in the future - our society will be profoundly re-shaped as a mixture of robotics and smart software replaces many of the jobs we do today.
But what then will people do, when they no longer have any work to give purpose to their lives? Will increasing automation lead to happiness, or unhappiness, at some time in the future?
The story's principal character is Dan White, a former journalist who has been made unemployed by smart software. He is one of a new generation of former professionals who no longer have anything to do. Through his fictional life, some of these issues are explored, as this book attempts to guess what might happen, at some point in the future.
Lurking above all these considerations lies the rise of artificial intelligence, which at some point will surpass mankind.
How will humanity live with an intelligence which is greater than it is? Will all this lead to a new golden age, or will humanity simply fade away? Through the medium of fiction some of these issues are explored, as this book attempts to guess what the future of humanity might be.
