Where the Spring Still Runs
Overview
How much of herself can a woman give away before she must choose what remains?
Before Ndidiamaka Chikodi learned how to build a life, she learned how to wait.
Growing up in the small village of Sokka, she dreams of university, independence, and a future that belongs to her. She wants more than the life circumstance seems prepared to offer her, and when a teacher encourages her ambitions, she begins to believe that perhaps wanting something different is not foolish after all.
Then she falls in love with Kelechi Obiora, a brilliant young man with dreams as large as her own.
Their love begins simply, beneath mango trees and beside the village spring, built on hope and the promise of a better life. Kelechi tells her he is going to build something real and wants her standing beside him when he does. Ndidiamaka believes him.
But standing beside someone while he builds his future is not the same as building your own.
As life carries them from Sokka to Otuama and eventually Port Harcourt, Ndidiamaka becomes a mother, a provider, an entrepreneur, and the steady hand holding their family together. Again and again, she makes choices for love. She waits. She sacrifices. She adapts. And little by little, the dreams she once had for herself begin to disappear beneath the needs of everyone around her.
When she eventually gives up the career she fought years to build so the family can follow Kelechi's opportunity in Port Harcourt, she begins to confront a painful truth: for much of her life, what she wanted has rarely been the most important question.
Then betrayal enters the marriage, and everything Ndidiamaka believed she had been protecting begins to fracture. She is forced to look beyond the years already invested, beyond the promises, beyond the woman she has been for everyone else, and ask the question she has almost forgotten how to answer:
What do I want for myself?
Where the Spring Still Runs is an emotional Nigerian novel about love, marriage, motherhood, ambition, sacrifice, betrayal, friendship, and the difficult courage of beginning again.
It is the story of a woman who spent years helping other people become who they were meant to be, only to discover that her own life was still waiting for her.
Because sometimes rebuilding does not mean returning to who you were.
Sometimes it means finally becoming the woman you were always capable of being.
