Albert Vanhoye was born in Hazebrouck, France, in 1923. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1941 and was ordained priest in 1954. He holds degrees in literature, philosophy, theology, and Scripture, including the Doctorate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute (1961). He has been professor at the Institute since 1963, serving also as Dean if the Biblical Faculty there from 1969 to 1975, and rector since 1984. He is the author of numerous books and articles, especially on the Epistle to the Hebrews.
