Overview
The book in codex format became the main medium for the creation and dissemination of textual knowledge, contributing to the social and cultural conjuncture called the Order of the Book. In the last fifty years, book formats have mushroomed, leaving the codex as one of many carriers of textual content. This suggests the need for a new definition of the book and raises the question of whether the Order is nearing its end. This volume proposes a dynamic model of the book across three elements: an information architecture represented most closely in the physical book but also apparent in the vanilla ebook and audiobook; the book's position as a carrier for the communication of knowledge and information; and a distinct business model. This stimulating work highlights the role of the book as a privileged medium of knowledge and assesses the role of the book and long-form reading in contemporary society.
