Overview
Forst himself stated that "writing should be as simple yet complex as life," and his trilogy, like most of his works, explores the themes of death and suicide. Through concise scene descriptions and ambiguous temporal and spatial backgrounds, he tells a family story spanning generations and centuries. He weaves together the lives and fates of his characters through interwoven threads of light and shadow and layered timelines. Først is a fervent advocate of New Norwegian and has always written exclusively in it. At the Nordic Council Literature Prize ceremony, former Norwegian Prime Minister Sørbek described the prize as the pride of Bergen, but Først declined such congratulations, stating, "This prize belongs to Westland. New Norwegian is mainly spoken in West Norway, except in Bergen. There, written Norwegian, Norwegian National Language, and Danish Norwegian are the primary languages."
