Phyllida Bright’s renown as a detective is growing. As her employer, Agatha Christie, works on her latest Hercule Poirot novel, word is spreading about the abilities of her meticulous housekeeper, who has now solved several mysteries. So when the Christies’ neighbor Vera Rollingbroke suspects her husband is having an affair at the beginning of Colleen Cambridge’s Two Truths and a Murder, she invites Phyllida to a dinner party to figure out if her husband is cheating on her with another guest, Genevra Blastwick. Phyllida quickly determines that he isn’t, but not before Genevra encourages the guests to play Two Truths and a Lie. During the course of the game, Genevra claims to have witnessed a murder. The rest of the guests assume she is lying, and the party quickly breaks up. The next morning, Phyllida learns that Genevra’s sister, Ethel, who was also at the party, died after being intentionally struck by a car while walking home. Phyllida believes Genevra was the true target: She really did see a murder, and the killer was trying to eliminate the only witness to the crime. With Agatha’s support, Phyllida races to solve both murders to protect Genevra and find justice for Ethel—before the killer can strike again. Two Truths and a Murder is the fifth book in the Phyllida Bright series, but readers need not be familiar with the series to enjoy this outing; Cambridge gives them everything they need to know about Phyllida, her friends, her fellow staff and 1930s Devon, England. Phyllida is an extremely capable sleuth: She’s intelligent, curious and brave, while still maintaining all the decorum required of her position as Christie’s housekeeper. Phyllida’s relationships with characters like Christie, town physician Dr. Bhatt and chauffeur Bradford provide entertainment and offer depth to her character. There is more than one romantic entanglement in this story, though Phyllida’s burgeoning relationship with Bradford is a high point. Cambridge’s mystery is more than simply reminiscent of Christie’s work: In this installment, she pays homage to the writer’s classic Hercule Poirot whodunit Hallowe’en Party, which involves a young girl claiming to have witnessed a murder shortly before she was killed. Phyllida solves her case as deftly as Poirot in this treat for mystery readers.
