But somewhere between doing what was expected of him and doing what was practical, he got very good at putting that dream off. Eventually, he stopped talking about it altogether. Now fifty, Ben has a respectable job at a small-town bank, a predictable routine, and an ex-wife. He also has a teenage daughter who's growing up while he struggles to find his place in her life. His one escape is the local community theatre, where he's spent years in the ensemble-never quite making it into the spotlight. He's become remarkably good at convincing himself that things could be worse. Then, quite unexpectedly, the leading man can't go on. And Ben, the understudy nobody ever expected to need, finally gets his chance. One extraordinary night rekindles his long-abandoned dream. Suddenly, a future he'd stopped imagining doesn't seem quite so impossible. But chasing an old dream means confronting more than Ben bargained for. As he navigates an unexpected opportunity, a complicated relationship with his daughter, and the uncomfortable prospect of starting over at fifty, he begins to question whether the life he once imagined is still the life he wants. With a cast of wonderfully imperfect characters and plenty of theatrical chaos, The Understudy is a funny, heartfelt, and relatable novella about regret, reinvention, and second chances.
