#Unsubscribed : How I am thriving in high school without social media (and you can, too)
Overview
Social media is the Achilles' heel of my generation. As teenagers, we are the first ones who have grown up living in a world that focuses on our number of followers, aesthetic feeds, and overall online presence. Let me tell you straight from the source of a sixteen-year-old: it is not easy It is difficult enough to try and manage our overwhelming lives already filled with extracurriculars, sports teams, clubs, honors societies, difficult classes, insane amounts of homework, the pressures of applying to prestigious universities, and an abundance of other expectations. On top of that, we are always thinking about our online profiles. Although social media platforms can be a great way to connect with friends--especially when they live in other parts of the world-- and spread awareness about great projects, it can also be extremely overwhelming. My parents never prohibited me from using social media (with a few guidelines, of course)--and for that I am incredibly grateful. They gave me the freedom to explore these networks and form my own understanding of them; however, beginning in fifth grade, I was hooked on social media. Every spare moment, you could find me checking out the latest posts of my favorite One Direction fan accounts, searching for inspirational quotes to post (for my ten or so followers), and trying to figure out how to use hashtags (until I found out otherwise, I thought you were supposed to do one word at a time... #i #did #not #know #what #i #was #doing). What began as using social media as an outlet for my inner fangirl soon became an obsession. I would always be checking my feed. And then I would check it again, 30 seconds later in case one of the accounts I was following had uploaded something new. I was addicted to social media. From there I proceeded to battle with whether or not I wanted to use social media. To use, or not to use? That was always the question. Over time, I realized that the key wasn't to abolish my usage completely--it was all about becoming balanced and finding a way to use social media in moderation. In #Unsubscribed I reveal my firsthand account of life as a teenager in the first generation to grow up with social media. For all my fellow teens out there: this book is for you There are suggestions on how to transition from addiction to moderation--all while maintaining a social life. For parents and teachers: this book is for you, too From rates and tbhs to hashtags and follow requests, there are insights on the hidden life that is going on in our heads and in our social media accounts. For everyone wanting to find their own personal balance of using and moderating social media, this book is for you. I changed my life, and you can change yours too--let's show the world how we can use social media in ways that work for us. For me, it looked like becoming #unsubscribed. What will it look like for you?
