Overview
When Sebastian Wolfner returns to his father's remote Bavarian estate for the reading of the will, he expects a straightforward inheritance. What he finds instead is a ventilation system that breathes, walls that pulse at four-second intervals, and a greenhouse full of specimens that remember being touched.
Karl Wolfner spent eighty years in a relationship with something forty million years old - something recovered from a Tibetan rock formation in 1938 and never fully explained to anyone, including his children. The will demands that Sebastian, his sister Ingrid, and his brother Friedrich each fulfil specific conditions before the estate transfers. What it doesn't explain is what the conditions are actually for. Or what Friedrich has been since the age of four.
The Wolfner Legacy is a novel about inheritance in its deepest sense: what a parent builds, what children are built into, and what it costs to be the person who maintains the record when everything else is transforming. Moving from gothic horror to cosmic revelation across forty chapters, it asks whether the most intimate relationship in history - between a single human family and an intelligence forty million years old - constitutes love, violation, or something for which no word yet exists.
The answer, arrived at slowly and honestly, is: all three. Simultaneously. Without resolution.
And then the experiment begins again.
