In the novel Drowning of the Salmon (Gharaq Al-Sal/amon) the abyss assumes different forms, its common denominator the rock bottom, appearing as the only aspect of the grip of familial and political oppression. Within the family, the rebellion against the father's grip, whose familial rule mirrors the situation in Syria, begins prematurely. In this novel, Syrian actress and writer Waha Al-Raheb positions her characters before various questions and dilemmas, primarily the question of identity that incessantly tests their humanity, as they start turning into monsters or escape their inevitable choices by leaping into the unknown. Alongside personal events, the narrative traverses global and Arab events, including the destruction of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, the birth of the Syrian revolution with all its dreams of freedom and subsequent disappointments, culminating in the confrontation of bodies with their fates at sea during their inevitable migration. A beautiful and authentic novel, possessing all the elements of narrative fiction.
