Movie Reviews

Reviews:
4 stars out of 5 -- "Coppola tells the story with terrific gusto and insouciant wit, tying together images from the first scene and the last, so that the narrative satisfyingly snaps shut." - 05/24/2017 The Guardian

"What this BEGUILED has done is deepen the material’s implicit wellsprings of loneliness and longing, mitigating some of the inherent sexism by attempting to genuinely grapple with the desires of its cooped-up characters." -- Grade: B - 06/22/2017 A.V. Club

"Sofia Coppola’s THE BEGUILED has some of the spooky, suggestive magic of a fairy tale. The opening shot could be of an ancient grove at the witching hour..." - 06/22/2017 Los Angeles Times

"Coppola’s BEGUILED is a handsomely shot and mounted production, full of stately images of moss-draped trees..." - 05/24/2017 Variety

3.5 stars out of 4 -- "[A] Southern Gothic that simmers with violent undercurrents and dark, subversive wit." - 06/20/2017 Rolling Stone

"[B]eautifully filmed, precisely staged, languorous and haunting....Colin Farrell delivers one of his finest and most richly layered performances..." - 06/29/2017 Chicago Sun-Times

5 stars out of 5 -- "Sofia Coppola’s sixth film may exhibit her signature languid style, but it’s as tightly crafted as the corsets of the women at the centre of her accomplished study of repression and gender dynamics." - 07/10/2017 Total Film

4 stars out of 5 -- "THE BEGUILED is a tremendously watchable movie, with its teasing flecks of noir and black comedy." - 07/13/2017 The Guardian

"Corseted and clad in immaculate costumes of ivory, cream, and dove-gray, whether for gardening, dinner, or an impromptu wound-dressing, Sofia Coppola’s latest film at times feels as genteel as its setting..." - 07/01/2017 Film Comment

"As John, Farrell is having the time of his life, getting to play off both the movie-star charisma that launched him into Hollywood, and his more aggressive, frightening side that has made him such an underrated character actor for the last decade." - 06/23/2017 The Atlantic
