Overview
Collation and Annotation of Ten Selected Rare Chinese Medical Formulary Books from Overseas 精选海外珍稀中医方书十种校释 Live Person Evidence-Based Formulas (Huo Ren Shi Zheng Fang) consists of two parts: Live Person Evidence-Based Formulas in 20 volumes and Supplement to Live Person Evidence-Based Formulas (Huo Ren Shi Zheng Fang Hou Ji), also in 20 volumes. Both were compiled by the same author, Liu Xinpu of the Song Dynasty, at different times. Live Person Evidence-Based Formulas comprises 20 volumes, each devoted to a single category. The categories are arranged as follows: all wind disorders, all qi disorders, cold damage, consumptive disorders, tonification and supplementation, gynecology, spleen and stomach, edema, diarrhea and dysentery, dyspnea and cough, small intestine qi, beriberi, head wind, hemorrhoids and anal fistula, carbuncles and gangrene, sores and ulcers, traumatic injuries, pediatrics, wasting-thirst disorder (xiao ke), and miscellaneous categories. Within these, Volume 7 (Spleen and Stomach) includes cholera, retained phlegm, regurgitation (gastric reflux), and cold malaria. Volume 8 (Edema) includes water qi, generalized swelling, and water gu. Volume 11 (Small Intestine Qi) includes hernia, unilateral testicular swelling, and urinary bladder disorders. Volume 13 (Head Wind) includes eye disorders, oral and dental disorders, and throat disorders. Volume 14 (Hemorrhoids and Anal Fistula) includes intestinal wind. Following each category, there may be some discussion, but most categories directly present the formulas. The formulas follow conventional format, listing indications, composition, and concluding with preparation and administration instructions. Supplement to Live Person Evidence-Based Formulas, also in 20 volumes, has no preface, but includes a brief introduction before its table of contents, as noted above. The structure follows that of the first collection. Most volumes contain a single category, while volumes 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 20 each contain two categories, making a total of 27 categories. However, the categories are not entirely the same as in the first collection. They are arranged as follows: wind strike, heart qi, consumptive disorders, white turbidity, night sweats, summerheat injury, miasmic malaria, cholera, phlegm-rheum, vomiting, abdominal fullness and distention, hernia/intestinal wind, childbirth and obstetrics, urinary difficulty/back carbuncle, blood disorders/poisoning, throat disorders/head and eye, oral and dental disorders/ear and nose, rashes and pox/scalds, miscellaneous formulas, and medicinal administration/cultivation practices.
