Roerich's saints come from everywhere - the Orthodox hermit, the Buddhist guardian, the Himalayan mother - painted by a man who crossed Central Asia between 1925 and 1928, founded the Master Institute of United Arts in Manhattan, and is held in India as a national figure. Virtue here is not an instruction. It is what is left standing when the alarm turns out to have been a fire all along.
