Overview
A Classic Work of Collation and Annotation of Traditional Chinese Medicine Ancient Texts Repatriated from Overseas 海外回归中医古籍校释经典之作 Mr. Yang's Family Collection of Formulas (Yang Shi Jia Cang Fang) was written by Yang Tan of the Southern Song Dynasty and completed in the fifth year of the Chunxi era (1178). This work is a collection of family formulas from the Yang family, who produced officials for two generations of the Southern Song, and it is frequently cited in Yuan and Ming dynasty medical texts. After the Qing dynasty, the book gradually became lost within China. To date, the only surviving copies outside of China are a Southern Song block-printed edition, a Yuan dynasty edition with handwritten supplements, and several Japanese manuscripts, all preserved in Japan.* The present punctuated and collated edition is based on a reproduction of the Southern Song block-printed edition repatriated from Japan, with the Yuan edition with handwritten supplements held in the Imperial Household Agency collection as a secondary collation text. Later works that cite this book, such as the Compendium of Medical Formulas (Yifang Dacheng) and the Formulas for Universal Relief (Puji Fang), serve as supplementary reference texts for collation. This work consists of twenty volumes. The first nineteen volumes are organized by disease category, with formulas arranged accordingly. The first fourteen volumes cover internal medicine, external conditions, and disorders of the ear, nose, throat, and mouth. Volumes fifteen and sixteen are two volumes on gynecological disorders. Volumes seventeen through nineteen are three volumes on pediatric formulas. Volume twenty contains miscellaneous formulas and seventy-five decoction formulas. As a formularly, this book has very distinctive features. It does not digress by citing earlier classical works; each volume begins directly with diseases and formulas. The format of the formulas is standardized, with clear indications, precise dosages and processing methods, detailed instructions for preparation, and concise and accurate guidance on administration. This book serves as a valuable reference for clinical practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine, researchers of TCM literature, and TCM enthusiasts.
