Synopsis:
An odd, drug-addicted choirmaster vies for the affections of an attractive young woman who is visiting his village. But when things don't go his way, he decides to eliminate what he perceives to be his only obstacle -- her fiance, his nephew, Edwin Drood.
Notes:
This is the first screen version of "Edwin Drood." The story was filmed again in England in 1993, directed by Timothy Forder and starring Robert Powell; also titled "The Mystery of Edwin Drood."
Dickens' unfinished novel (only half completed at the time of his death) simply ends with Drood missing. Both film adaptations of the fragment decide that Drood has been murdered, and they also pick the same murderer from among Dickens' stable of eccentric characters.
In the 1980s the story was transformed into a popular Broadway musical (score by Rupert Holmes). In this version the murderer's identity was decided nightly by an audience vote.
