Precaution
Overview
Precaution is a novel written by James Fenimore Cooper, first published in 1820. The story is set in England and revolves around the lives of the wealthy and aristocratic Moseley family. The patriarch of the family, Mr. Moseley, is concerned about the future of his two daughters, Caroline and Julia, and decides to marry them off to wealthy suitors. However, the sisters have different ideas and are more interested in finding true love than marrying for money.Caroline falls in love with the charming but penniless clergyman, Mr. Hazlehurst, while Julia is pursued by the wealthy and arrogant Lord Chatterton. As the sisters navigate their romantic entanglements, they also encounter social and political issues of the time, such as the tension between the landed gentry and the rising middle class.Throughout the novel, Cooper explores themes of class, gender, and morality, and provides a commentary on the societal norms and expectations of the time. Precaution is considered to be Cooper's first novel, and while it received mixed reviews upon its initial publication, it is now regarded as an important work of early American literature.Looks of a singular import were exchanged between Colonel Egerton and Sir Herbert Nicholson, at the mention of Denbigh's name; which, as the latter had just asked the favor of taking wine with Mrs. Wilson, did not escape her notice. Emily had innocently mentioned his precipitate retreat the night before; and he had, when reminded of his engagement to dine with them that very day, and promised an introduction to Sir Herbert Nicholson by John, in her presence, suddenly excused himself and withdrawn. With an indefinite suspicion of something wrong, she ventured, therefore, to address Sir Herbert Nicholson. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
