Movie Reviews
Reviews:
3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[A]s the film makes abundantly clear, you don’t know what you’ve gained until you’re forced to face the loss of something taken for granted." - 11/16/2020 Rolling Stone
"The director, Darius Marder, does innovative things with sound design, creating scrapes and muffles that feel just out of reach, and he has subtitled the entire film so it can be experienced in a theater by both the hearing and deaf communities. All effective, and all good." - 09/16/2019 Variety
"Ahmed's performance and a sure-footed script by Marder and his brother Abraham ensure that this remains one man's story -- and one that should be warmly welcomed at art houses." - 09/08/2019 Hollywood Reporter
"The fragility of daily existence is captured empathetically and compassionately in Darius Marder’s excellent SOUND OF METAL." - 11/20/2020 RogerEbert.com
"Sometimes it sounds like we’re underwater; other times there’s a shrill, high-pitched hum around the perimeter of the dialogue. Combined with Riz Ahmed’s nuanced, naturalistic lead performance, the result is a palpably empathetic experience." - 11/18/2020 A.V. Club
"It’s a small film made larger by Ahmed’s ability to take something so interior -- hearing loss -- and make it so visible, so palpable." - 12/02/2020 Washington Post
"As Ruben's fear and rage begins to open itself to the unknown, the movie reaches toward something profound -- finding real, furious power in the spaces between the sound." Grade: A- - 11/20/2020 Entertainment Weekly
"Riz Ahmed's performance is superb as a rock drummer who loses his hearing and learns to lean on members of the tight-knit deaf community to cope." - 12/22/2020 USA Today
"Rising star Riz Ahmed is a revelation as a punk-band drummer whose hearing is disappearing. Watching his character process information is riveting..." - 01/20/2021 Chicago Sun-Times
4 stars out of 5 -- "The movie opens with a blistering performance -- SOUND OF METAL does that thing music dramas rarely do: deliver rocking-out authentically -- so shredding and loud it practically gives you ringing ears." - 04/07/2021 Empire
"On a visceral level, the immersive sound design adds to an uncannily engaging film experience." - 04/12/2021 Total Film
"[T]he standout element is Ahmed’s magnificent performance; he plays Ruben as a man as tightly stretched as the skin of his snare drum." - 12/03/2021 Sight and Sound
