The events of the novella unfold in a small, unnamed village that could be any village in our region. The story: The villagers glorify their son who has returned from abroad, a young man who takes a stand in defense of justice and against oppression. They elevate him to the level of a legend, seeing him as a hero in the face of reality. But the authorities view him as a threat. And while the villagers have celebrated him for years, they never truly supported him. When suspicion arises, the same villagers abandon him, even participating in his murder and the mutilation of his corpse. Thus, the village kills the very son it gave birth to-something worse than the law of the jungle, where even mothers devour their own young.
