Overview
The Revelation of the Name
The second name was not given to a patriarch or a prophet. It was given to a runaway slave girl, and she is the one who spoke it.
Her name was Hagar. She was an Egyptian, a servant in the tents of Abram and Sarai. Sarai had no child, and after ten years in Canaan she did what the custom of that time allowed. She gave her maid to her husband, so that a child might be born in her name. Hagar conceived. Then everything went sour. Hagar looked down on her mistress. Sarai blamed Abram. Abram said, "Thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee." The Bible does not soften what came next: "when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face" (Genesis 16:6).
So a pregnant woman, a foreigner with no husband of her own and no money, set out alone across the desert. She took the road to Shur. That is the road to Egypt. She was trying to walk home.
"And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness" (Genesis 16:7). This is the first time in the Bible that the angel of the LORD appears, and He appears to her. Notice His first word. In the whole chapter, Abram and Sarai never once say her name. To them she is "my maid" and "thy maid." The angel says, "Hagar."
He asked her two questions: "Whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go?" She could answer only the first. She knew what she was running from. She had no idea where she was going. He told her to return, and He gave her a promise. She would have a son, and his name would be Ishmael, "God hears," "because the LORD hath heard thy affliction" (Genesis 16:11).
Then Hagar did something remarkable. Abraham would one day give a name to a mountain. Jacob would give names to places. Hagar gave a name to the LORD who had spoken to her. "Thou God seest me." In Hebrew: El Roi.
